International Youth Exchange 2012

As well as our other charitable activities, Lions are known throughout the world for projects and programmes to develop the best in young people, to fit them for what can be a difficult and challenging world. One way of achieving this is to provide opportunities for young people from many different countries and cultures to come together and learn that together we can achieve much more than we can achieve individually.

More than one hundred Youth Camps are organised around the world each year, and one of these is hosted by Lions Multiple District 105, Great Britain and Ireland. The 2012 Youth Camp was held between 4th and 14th August by District 105BN, of which Southport Lions is a part. Our Club, in cooperation with other local Lions Clubs, provided a day’s activities for the attendees on Saturday 11th August.

The morning commenced with a little light gardening on the Southport Lions sponsored roundabouts in town, followed by time spent helping with preparations for this year’s Southport Flower Show.

Next on the schedule was fun! The young people, together with members of Lions, adjourned to Waterside Lodge, on the Marine Lake, when a considerable amount of water was rearranged with sailing, rafting and canoeing.

The day concluded with a barbecue, before our guests returned to the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool which has been their base here in the North West.

So, although it was on a much smaller scale than other events going on further to the south, Southport Lions, and our colleagues from other clubs in the area, have contributed a little bit towards international understanding and friendship!
