Smörgåsbord 2009

14th February 2009

It wasn't our fault, honestly. Valentine's Day just happened to be on the same day as the Southport Lions Smorgasbord. We would have moved Valentine's Day if it wasn't for the fact that it added a certain je ne sais quoi to the proceedings.

To be sure, the format of the Smörgåsbord followed the tried and tested course, but then, as we have found out in the past, this is what the rampaging Vikings, sorry, Lions and Guests actually want.

The most important events in the preparation take place in the front of house, of course, but round the back there are a few things to be done. Mostly, it seems, chopping, and peeling, and washing up - those things that require a dedicated workforce who are free from the constraints imposed by celebrity. The Lions, partners and friends are celebrities indeed, to all who benefit from their activities.

Meanwhile, out front, more Lions, partners and friends are setting the tables, polishing the glasses, blowing up the balloons and generally doing the glamorous bits. And there is nothing more glamorous, responsible, socially desirable etc etc than skilfully driving a vacuum cleaner between the tables and chairs picking up those last little fragments of string and the odd bit of sticky tape.

But then, soon enough, the guests arrive, the food is set out, and the serious business of the evening begins. Things come and go like magic.

And even though we have studied the pictures with a high powered microscope, we still can't see how Magician Rick Tynan managed to join the bits of string back together again!

By general consensus, this year's Smörgåsbord was one of the best. At least, everyone who was there says so, and that's all that matters!
