Christmas Lights Switch-On

16th November 2008

I really don't know what we would do without the Southport Lions Mobile Command Centre, also known as the Chuck Wagon. Imagine trying to put all our stock of flashing novelties into brown paper bags, and stacking them in front of the Town Hall, ready to sell to the thousands of people attending the Christmas Lights Switch On. Imagine trying to make a nice warming tea or coffee perched in front of a camping gas stove on the footpath. But fortunately these visions are the stuff of nightmares: the Chuck Wagon is a reality, and with this as a base Southport Lions Intrepid Bucketeers move into action like a smooth, well-oiled machine.

All of which is to the good, because the Ferocious Lion, one of our main attractions, does tend to get a little tired at these events, and sometimes, as with all wild creatures, finds it necessary to take a little time out.

But comes the call of duty, and the Ferocious Lion, like all the others, together with friends and supporters, leaps into action. Each year, our Intrepid Bucketeers march along with the procession, offering the spectators a unique opportunity to ease the strain on their pockets and purses, before turning themselves into Retail Agents, selling an amazing line in flashing novelties just as the sun is setting and the dusk makes everything just that little bit magical.
