80th Southport Flower Show

20th, 21st, 22nd & 23rd August 2009

The Eightieth Southport Flower Show. Wow! What an achievement. The biggest, brightest and best Flower Show around celebrated a significant anniversary this year and, as for many years past, the Members, friends and supporters of Southport Lions did their bit to make the Show one of the best ever.

Carrying loads of shopping around for half a day is no-one’s idea of fun, so our three Plant Crèche and Left Luggage locations provided much-needed relief for hundreds of visitors.

Strategically located near each of the entrances (and exits!), our Relief Centres allowed for retail therapy to continue more or less without interruption. Most people, fortunately, remember, during the day, just exactly how much stuff they have bought, but there are always a few enthusiasts who end up with rather more shopping than would go free on even a non-budget airline!

But Lions can usually be relied on for helpful advice, or in this particular case, lots of green string, which we use to tie numbers of plastic bags together, which makes the struggle to the carpark or the railway station that much easier. Jennifer Cropper and Lion Sylvia Corfield are seen here waiting to welcome our next clients..

Elsie Leather was our resident expert in re-homing homeless Cuddly Lions

But though we try to arrange the boxes, bags and carriers in the most artistic ways possible, we aren’t quite up to some of the specialist displays, such as this, featuring stars from the silent silver screen, put together with consummate artistry by one of Her Majesty’s local institutions for the marginally misguided.

Where to go from here

Not everything was Strictly

Come Flower Arranging, however. There was plenty for younger visitors, too!

We were all extremely chuffed when Sharron Roukin, Lion helper, supporter, and wife of Lion Ray Roukin, won First Prize in class for her beautifully crafted display seen above. The Judge said ‘beautiful and imaginative’ and who could disagree?

So, the Show is over for another year. It’s hard work for a small club, manning three locations for four days, and we owe a tremendous debt to fellow Lions from other Clubs, our helpers and friends, without whom it wouldn’t be possible.

So, if you were at the Show this year, we’d like to say ‘Thank You’ and if you weren’t, well, we hope to see you next year!
