Southport Charity Carnival

28th June 2008

This year, Southport Lions decided to return to our roots for the Charity Carnival Parade. Lions come from the Jungle, right? Right. So a bit of the jungle is what we brought to Southport. Not just Lions, but tigers, gorillas and bucketeers, too! Plus a bright yellow Emu.

First on the schedule for the day is preparing the vehicle for our safari. We are very grateful to Formby Timber Services for providing an excellent flatbed truck which made a first rate mobile disco.

You would never think that buried underneath all that bunting was a computer controlled disco unit, with laptop PC. It is a very modern jungle we inhabit! And to prove the point, we do not regard age as any bar to joining in our fundraising activities, and surely enough the younger element are usually more successful!

Once the safari was ready to go, we all set off for Knowsley Road, where the Parade was being assembled. You have never seen such a collection of sights. Next to us was an open topped bus, being managed by a green and yellow turtle, and just behind was a traction engine. However, in due course, we all set off, collecting buckets at the ready.

It has to be admitted that, however hard we tried, not all  the jungle creatures looked fierce and wild. Some, it has to be said, were just a bit cuddly.

While there were hundreds of people along the route of the parade, not everyone found it easy to go and stand on the side of the street. So, just to spread a little sunshine, our bright yellow Emu made a few house calls on the way - just to say 'Hello!'

We had a greeeaaaat day out, and we collected some poor, homeless, unwanted coins from generous members of the public on the way. All of this, 100%, will go to our charitable activities, so a big 'thank you' to everyone.
